MetaMask makes Stellar a default network, bringing global payments into the Open Money platform

First major self-custodial platform to ship Stellar network by default; every existing MetaMask account now has a Stellar address, no setup required

Lisbon, Portugal – October 29, 2026 – MetaMask, the world's largest self-custodial financial platform, today announced that Stellar, the blockchain network purpose-built for global payments, is now a default network within MetaMask Mobile and Extension. Announced with the Stellar Development Foundation at its Meridian conference in Lisbon, the integration is live today.

Stellar has operated as a public payments network since 2014, settling transactions in roughly five seconds for network fees of a fraction of a cent. It processed $55.6 billion in payment volume in 2025, up 52% year over year, according to the Stellar Development Foundation, spanning remittances, commerce and public-sector rails. That design reflects the problem it was built for: the World Bank puts the global average cost of sending $200 across borders at 6.36%, more than double the UN Sustainable Development Goal target of 3%.

MetaMask is the first major self-custodial platform to make Stellar a default network. Until now, MetaMask users who wanted to transact on Stellar needed a separate wallet. Every MetaMask account now includes a Stellar address, derived from the recovery phrase users already have. Existing Stellar users can import SRP from other wallets.

Users can hold and manage XLM, trustline assets and Soroban tokens alongside assets on other networks, send and receive them, and swap between Stellar and other supported networks.

Stellar joins MetaMask as the platform expands beyond Ethereum-based networks toward Open Money: one account for holding, sending, spending and trading money in both crypto and traditional forms.

"For most of the world, where you're born still decides what money you can hold, where you can send it, and what it costs to move," said Gal Eldar, Chief Product Officer at MetaMask. "We're building toward Open Money, where the same rails work for everyone regardless of where you start, and Stellar has spent more than a decade proving that at scale. From today, MetaMask users can transact on Stellar directly, and Stellar users can bring their everyday payments into a platform they already know and trust."

"Every MetaMask user now has access to a network that already moves billions of dollars in real-world payments, from remittances to commerce to government programs. When the rails people need are already in the wallet they trust, using them stops being a choice they have to make and becomes something they simply do," said Denelle Dixon, CEO and Executive Director, Stellar Development Foundation.
