Freighter launched in 2020 as a browser extension and reference implementation for developers building on the Stellar network. When smart contracts arrived, it became the first wallet to support them.

Since then, total value locked (TVL) on Stellar has grown more than 30x. New apps and protocols have expanded what people can do on the network, and more people are using them.

Today, Freighter becomes Varial, with a new name and a new focus: helping you find and use the best of the Stellar ecosystem.

It starts with Discover, a directory of apps across the network, making it easy for you to see what’s available and connect right from your wallet.

Varial also brings more functionality directly into the wallet. Swap Stellar tokens, with swap router integrations coming soon to help you find competitive rates across the network. Track token performance with price charts, and view and manage your Stellar NFTs in Collectibles.

Your private keys will continue to stay on your device, and Blockaid protection helps identify and block malicious transactions. Varial does not charge wallet fees; Stellar network fees and any third-party provider fees may apply.

What’s next

Earn will bring DeFi positions directly into Varial, starting with Blend. You’ll be able to enter positions and track your portfolios right from your wallet, with more opportunities added as the ecosystem grows.

Deposit addresses, developed with Stellar-native team Lightsail, will make it easier to bring funds from other networks. You’ll be able to fund your Stellar accounts by sending USDC from EVM wallets.

Account management is getting simpler too, with support for importing unlimited seed phrases and secret keys. Improved transaction previews will show changes to signers, trustlines, and allowances before you approve.

For developers

More people discovering Stellar means more potential users for what you build.

Apps can be considered for inclusion in Discover*, and upcoming launches may be featured on the Varial homepage and through in-app notifications.

On mobile, upcoming support for direct connections to the Varial mobile app, alongside WalletConnect, will mean less integration work for you and a faster connection for your users.
