A Bank-Issued Stablecoin Moves Real Money on Stellar

Last November, U.S. Bank announced it was testing custom stablecoin issuance on the Stellar network. Bloomberg covered it as a signal that one of the largest banks in the United States saw a public blockchain as viable infrastructure for regulated money. Our earlier post on that announcement has the background.

Now, U.S. Bank has announced its first pilot transaction on the Stellar network: utilizing USBDC, the bank’s proprietary U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin, to enable a cross-border payment between its entities in North America and Europe.

It is one of the first bank-issued stablecoins deployed on a public blockchain. The value moved onchain while the transaction stayed connected to the bank’s core finance, risk, compliance, and operations systems.

Why this milestone is different

Plenty of institutions have run blockchain experiments in a sandbox. This pilot ran through the bank’s internally developed Digital Asset Platform, integrated with the systems and controls U.S. Bank already uses to move money. The pilot evaluates the full lifecycle a regulated issuer needs: minting, payment, redemption, freezing, and clawback.

A bank cannot put assets on a network that offers speed without control. Compliance has to hold at the same layer the money moves on, every time, without exception.

What the network provided

Stellar was conceived as infrastructure for regulated financial services from its inception, and the features U.S. Bank exercised in this pilot live in the protocol itself. Issuers can freeze assets, claw back funds, and set authorization requirements at the asset level. Those controls are native to the network and part of how it works, meaning an issuer inherits critical compliance features instead of having to build and then manage them on their own.

The performance profile follows the same design logic. Settlement finalizes in seconds, transaction costs stay below a cent, and the network has maintained 99.99% uptime for more than a decade. Cross-border treasury movement demands all three at once, on every transaction, in both directions.

What comes next

U.S. Bank and the Stellar Development Foundation are evaluating further applications together: liquidity management, collateral mobility, and cross-border treasury operations among them.

For every bank, asset manager, and market infrastructure operator watching this space: A top-five U.S. bank issued its own dollar on a public network, connected it to core banking, and kept its risk framework intact while doing it. The infrastructure question has an answer now, and it’s the Stellar network.
